Thoughts on the backyard...

As progress with our fence creeps forward (fingers crossed) I am spending some time thinking about finally landscaping our backyard. Right now it is hideous. Bare dirt throughout most of it, overgrown on the edges. Blech. I have many thoughts, and I may get around to drawing a layout of what I would like it to look like. Not quite there yet.
Here are some pics that I found at Sunset.com:

I love this little patio with a gravel center for a firepit, and surrounded by brick.

I also envision many paths in our newly landscaped yard. I enjoy this one made out of flagstone with groundcover between the stones. Pretty.

  1. I love the first pic, it would be an amazing idea for our backyard... if we ever manage to finish the outside & start working on the outside.

Did I mention that a 'kindly' neighbor taped a newspaper article about the local city code penalties for not mowing your lawn to our screen door??

Not so much landscaping going on at our house yet :)

  2. We planted grass between flagstones, and it looks cool and all, but I keep thinking how much easier something like creeping thyme would be to maintain. Just a thought.

  3. Sandy - I've actually avoided mentioning how we got an official letter saying that our weedy yard was a "public nuisance." It would have made a great blog post, but I'm way embarrassed. Now, we keep our weeds trimmed to a tidy height.

Kristen - Yes, I'm thinking creeping thyme! Fun...

  4. That would look great! I've had some ideas similar to this for my future patio in the backyard. I love the idea of a fire pit too. Makes the waning days of fall more enjoyable for outside entertaining.
